A starling murmuration at dusk: tens of thousands of birds moving as one body, the flock stretching, folding and rolling through itself, dense black regions forming and dissolving as birds change direction in waves. No individual bird is followed. The shape of the whole is the subject. Static locked-off camera

A bait ball of sardines underwater: a vast spherical school rotating and pulsing as one mass, silver flanks flashing in unison as the whole ball turns, the sphere compressing and bulging as it reacts to something outside frame. Shafts of sunlight from above, deep blue water, static locked-off camera

A leafcutter ant column crossing a branch: hundreds of ants in a continuous double file, each carrying a cut green leaf fragment held upright like a sail, the line flowing steadily in one direction while a thinner return stream moves the opposite way. Macro, dappled forest light, static locked-off camera

Dry autumn leaves caught in a vortex on a city street: a few hundred leaves lifted into a slow rotating column by a corner eddy, rising and falling within the vortex, some escaping the edge and settling while new ones are drawn in. The street itself is empty and still. Low golden light, static locked-off camera

A scramble crossing seen from directly above: crowds surge from all four corners at once, the streams interpenetrating in the middle without collision, umbrellas and heads flowing through each other like fluids, the intersection filling and then emptying completely. Wet asphalt, overhead perspective, static locked-off camera

A summer meadow at night filled with fireflies: hundreds of small warm yellow-green points of light scattered through the depth of the field, blinking on and off at different moments, near ones large and soft, distant ones tiny pinpricks. Waves of flashes travel loosely across the group. Tall grass silhouetted, deep blue night sky, static locked-off camera
