Frame within a frame: looking through a dark stone archway at a sunlit courtyard beyond, the archway occupying the outer edges of the image in deep shadow and acting as a natural border, the bright scene contained entirely inside that opening, strong tonal separation

Perfect bilateral symmetry: a temple building reflected in a completely still pond so the upper and lower halves mirror each other exactly, the axis of symmetry running dead center vertically, matching pillars on both left and right, no element breaking the mirror

Rule of thirds composition: a coastal landscape where the horizon line sits exactly one third up from the bottom edge, a lone lighthouse placed precisely on the right vertical third line, the upper two thirds filled with layered cloud, deliberate and textbook framing, nothing centered

A vibrating tuning fork lowered into a shallow dish of still water: the moment the tines touch the surface they throw off a violent spray of fine droplets and the water erupts into a chaotic fizz around them, the disturbance concentrated exactly at the two contact points while the rest of the dish stays calm, dark background, hard side light catching the droplets, static locked-off camera

A large bronze bell just after being struck: the metal surface shimmering with visible vibration, the reflections on its polished curve wobbling and distorting as the bell rings, the distortion gradually calming until the reflections hold still, dim temple interior, static locked-off camera

Water filling a tall glass in close up: the stream drilling into the surface, the rising water level and a column of small bubbles climbing the inside of the glass, the meniscus curving up against the wall as it approaches the rim, static locked-off camera

Fine sand scattered on a taut drum head, seen from directly above: when the drum is struck the grains jump and migrate, gathering into a symmetrical geometric pattern of lines and leaving the vibrating areas empty, the pattern sharpening as the grains settle, static locked-off camera

A flat stone skipping across still water: each impact throwing a small crown of droplets and leaving an expanding ring behind, the rings overlapping and interfering with each other as the stone bounces away, low angle just above the surface, static locked-off camera

A wooden match STARTS COMPLETELY UNLIT with no flame anywhere in frame. A hand drags the match head across a rough striking strip. Friction throws a burst of orange sparks. Only then does the head catch fire, the flame flaring up large and blue at the base before shrinking and settling into a steady yellow teardrop. Dark background, static locked-off camera.

Macro texture study: a single bird feather, individual barbs separating and rejoining along the vane, the fine barbules visible where they interlock, translucent at the edges where light passes through, soft gradient from dark quill to pale tip, fills the entire frame

Macro texture study: raw poured concrete, the pebble aggregate showing through a worn cement skin, small air voids scattered across the surface, a hairline crack running diagonally, cool grey under flat overcast light, fills the entire frame

Macro texture study: the broken edge of thick glass, the fracture surface showing conchoidal ripples like frozen waves, the edge catching light as a bright thin line, faint green tint visible through the thickness, sharp and cold, fills the entire frame

Macro texture study: old leather worn smooth in places and deeply creased in others, the grain pattern stretched around the creases, darker polish built up in the low areas, a few pale scuffs where the surface has been abraded, warm brown, fills the entire frame

Macro texture study: a dense cushion of moss growing over stone, thousands of tiny upright stems each catching a highlight, deep green in the shadows and almost yellow where light hits, a few water droplets held between the fronds, fills the entire frame

Macro texture study: the surface of clear ice with air bubbles frozen inside at different depths, some spherical and some elongated into teardrops, fine internal fractures scattering light into faint white feathers, backlit so the interior structure glows, fills the entire frame

Macro texture study: crumpled silk fabric, soft folds catching light along their crests and falling into deep shadow in the valleys, the sheen shifting from pale gold to shadowed blue depending on the angle of each fold, fills the entire frame

Macro texture study: wet granite, water beading and pooling in the shallow depressions of the coarse crystalline surface, flecks of quartz and feldspar catching the light, darker where saturated and lighter where drying, fills the entire frame

Macro texture study: a sheet of heavily rusted iron, orange and brown oxidation blooming in layered scabs, some flakes lifted at the edges about to fall away, pitted craters in the metal beneath, raking side light picking out every ridge, fills the entire image

Shot on an anamorphic cinema lens: a night city street with horizontal blue lens flares streaking across the frame from every bright light source, oval shaped bokeh balls instead of round ones, slight edge softness, wide 2.39:1 cinemascope framing, filmic

Shot on a 180 degree circular fisheye lens: a skateboard park seen from ground level, the horizon curving into a full circle, straight ramp edges bent into arcs, the sky occupying a domed region overhead, extreme barrel distortion, the photographer's own feet visible at the bottom edge
