Mandarin ducks in the palace pond: a pair of mandarin ducks gliding side by side across a still lotus pond in the grounds of an old Korean palace in autumn — the male with orange sail-like wing feathers, a broad white eye stripe and a purple chest, the female plain soft grey-brown with a thin white eye ring. Behind them a small Korean pavilion of plain aged timber with grey giwa roof tiles reflected in the water (NOT Japanese, NOT Chinese architecture), red maple leaves floating. The ducks fill about one quarter of the frame width. Calm morning light. No text, no letters, no logos.
