A shared kimjang kitchen on the ground floor of a Korean apartment complex, photographed in late November. A long bright room with a tiled floor sloping to drains, a row of eight deep stainless steel sinks, huge red rubber basins on low stools, mountains of salted napa cabbage halves stacked on draining racks, and a long table where six neighbours in rubber aprons and gloves rub red pepper paste into the leaves. Kimchi containers lined up by the door for each household. Steam from a stockpot, windows fogged. All people have normal hands with five fingers. Blank signboards, no lettering anywhere.
