Eopsin, the Korean household spirit of fortune that takes the form of a large gentle serpent living in the storehouse (Korean folk belief, Korean traditional clothing and objects, NOT Japanese, NOT Chinese.), now in the back storeroom of an old neighbourhood rice shop. A long golden-brown snake with a calm, almost sleepy expression lies coiled on top of a stack of plain unbranded rice sacks, among bags of beans and dried red peppers, a hand scale and plastic scoops. A single bare bulb, warm dusty light, the shop front glimpsed through a bead curtain. Benevolent and homely, not menacing. No text, no letters, no hangul, no readable signs, no logos.
