How the 1920s imagined the future, as a still from an imaginary silent film (not any real film): a vertical city at night in German Expressionist style, towers leaning at impossible angles, narrow bridges strung between skyscrapers at dizzying heights, tiny biplanes threading between them, searchlight beams cutting the sky, crowds of minute figures in long coats crossing a bridge. Painted flats and forced perspective, harsh chiaroscuro, black-and-white nitrate film tinted deep blue with amber highlights, scratches, flicker and gate weave.
