The Constellation Surveyor: on a high grassy plateau under a vast star-filled night sky, a surveyor in a padded jacket peers through a brass theodolite on a tripod aimed at the stars, while thin taut silver survey lines run from small stakes in the ground up into the sky, connecting selected stars into a constellation-like measurement grid. A folding table holds a lantern, a hand-drawn star chart with only dots and lines, and a measuring tape. The figure is small, about 1/6 of the frame height, the sky occupying the top 3/4. Patient, workmanlike. No text, no letters, no numbers anywhere.
